Tonight’s Concert Pick: Greg Dulli at Johnny Brenda’s

Greg DulliThe sands of time have not been kind to many early-’90s alternative rock staples. Thankfully, for every heaping handful of mainstream-radio-friendly alterna-rock bands we look back on now with a mix of confusion, embarrassment, and horror, there’s a band like The Afghan Whigs. Sure, tracks such as “Debonair” and “Gentlemen” (off the band’s 1993 major-label debut, Gentlemen) are as much a product of that era as anything you’d hear on the radio 17 years ago—but, if they come with a timestamp, they also come with a seal of approval that says, “This was everything that was right about alternative rock in 1993.” So it comes as little surprise that former Afghan Whigs frontman Greg Dulli has managed to stay relevant with bands such as The Twilight Singers and The Gutter Twins (featuring former Screaming Trees singer Mark Lanegan) long after the genre in which he originally found success has long since faded. Tonight, Dulli performs as part of his “An Evening With Greg Dulli” tour, during which he’ll play songs from throughout his entire career, including the debut of new songs from the upcoming Twilight Singers album on Sub Pop. Greg Dulli performs with Craig Wedren at 9 p.m. at Johnny Brenda’s; tickets to the 21+ show are SOLD OUT.
