Download Strand Of Oaks’ cover of Phosphorescent’s “Wolves”
Back when we released that stunning Key Studio Session with Tim Showalter of Strand of Oaks, I mentioned there were a couple of covers in his setlist. Today, we present one of them: Showalter’s haunting rendition of the song “Wolves” by Phosphorescent. (Big thanks to that band and their management for letting us share it with you.) Stream or download it below and get chills.
While you’re in an Oaks frame of mind, got plans for this Friday? If so, they had better include a stop at The Marvelous! in West Philly, where Showalter will curate a party for the recent vinyl release of Pope Killdragon. (Which, let me tell you, slays so much harder on record than it does on mp3, from those warm synthesizer blankets on “Bonfire” and “Daniel’s Blues” to the sharp fingerpick guitar patterns throughout—even extending to Alexander King’s iconic cover art. I’m no format snob, but this is one album that definitely benefits from being presented on a grander scale.)
On the bill are two of Showalter’s Philadelphia favorites, electro-psych crew Golden Ages and Brandon Morsberger of Drums Like Machine Guns, who performs a set of his solo blues instrumentals. Showalter will play a brief acoustic set as well, but your next chance to see a full-on Oaks performance isn’t until April 13 at Johnny Brenda’s with Joe Pug. For now, swing by to pick up your vinyl, congratulate Showalter, wish him well on his South By Southwest trek, and take in some Killdragon-approved Philly music.
