Does the Toronto-based electronic duo Crystal Castles really make music that sounds like “ferocious, asphyxiating sheets of warped two-dimensional Gameboy glitches and bruising drum bombast that pierces your skull with their sheer shrill force, burrowing deep into the brain like a fever” (as this old Drowned In Sound article described it many moons ago)? Or is that just another example of a bored music journalist trying to find a creative way to say “This band does the ‘bleep-bloop-do-boop’ video-game noise thing plus the kick/snare drum-machine-beat thing and the distorted-yelly-yelly thing”? However you want to describe Crystal Castles’ music, producer Ethan Kath and vocalist Alice Glass have been creating and performing it through broken bones, copyright-infringement controversies, live-show violence, and the scathing love of Hipster Runoff since releasing their first 7-inch in 2006. Crystal Castles performs with Teengirl Fantasy at 8 p.m. at Theatre Of The Living Arts; tickets to the show are $29.
