If you think metal is just a lot of aggressive yelling, blast beats and loud, heavy guitars, think again. On their new LP Beast of Light, Philly prog-metal outfit SURGEON have crafted a collection of songs that are yes, loud and sludgy, but also dramatic, dynamic and intricate.

And the quartet spent a lot of time getting it that way. Coming in three years after their last effort Chemical Reign*, Beast of Light is set for release on August 30th. Giving fans a preview over on Metal Injection, this week, the band shared some thoughts about the writing and recording of the record:

Beast Of Light was a growing process different than any of the other albums. It took a lot more personal discipline to get everything perfect. We actually took the time and built our own studio to make sure we could produce it to a place we were happy, without the hourly budget constrains. This put a little more pressure on the duality of  being an artist as well as an engineer but the amount I’ve learned because of it feels very empowering.

Listen to “War Is Love” below and stream Beast of Light in full here; SURGEON will head out on tour later this month with Chicago’s Master.
