Fans of the greater Philadelphia region’s pool of talented indie-chamber singer-songwriters (see also: Ben Smith, Andrew Lipke) would do well to acquaint themselves with Lancaster newcomer Douglas Thomas. His music is a unique mix of 20th century classical influences, folk-pop song structures and lyrics that find room for both romantic yearning and ecological nerdery. For instance, “Paulownia” – it’s named for a species of tree considered by some to be invasive, others to be a good source of material for making musical instruments, and Thomas turns it into a broader metaphor on top of that. Considering that he focused on both environmental studies and music at Franklin & Marshall, it’s a fitting blend, and Thomas makes it work. This past Tuesday night, he appeared on the air on XPN2 with DJ Adam G, and the live session has already made its way online. Listen below, and grab a free download of it at Thomas’ Bandcamp page. While you’re there, you should also check out Thomas’ brand new Trimmings EP, which is celebrating its release tonight in fittingly pastoral surroundings – the Millport Conservancy in Lititz. Douglas Thomas and Mount Gomery play The Millport Conservancy in Lititz, Pa., tonight at 6 p.m. Admission to the all-ages show is $15.
