23 year old singer-songwriter John Fullbright was raised and still lives in Okemah, Oklahoma, birthplace of Woody Guthrie. On Fullbright’s new album, From The Ground Up, he draws on the tradition of Guthrie along with some of Fullbright’s earliest songwriting heroes like Townes Van Zandt and Mickey Newbury. From The Ground Up is a remarkably accomplished record from a gifted up and coming story teller. This week, Fullbright’s album is WXPN’s Featured Album of The Week. Writing about the album, WXPN’s Mike Vasilikos says: “In a time where there is no short supply of guys with guitars, John Fullbright will grab your attention as a commanding singer, clever lyricist and earnest songwriter.” Fullbright performs this Thursday night at the Philadelphia Folk Festival where he will record a World Cafe performance with Cafe host David Dye.
