Today’s Free at Noon show featured the recently reunited power pop band, the dB’s. Performing in support of their first new studio release in 25 years (and touring with their original lineup for the first time in 30 years) the band joked that some of the crowd weren’t even born last time they came around. The dB’s kicked off the show with the first two tracks from the new album, “That Time is Gone” and “Before We Were Born,” then proceeded to skip around to various other new tracks, playing seven of the twelve songs on the new album. To mix up their set, the band threw in the song “Living a Lie” from their 1982 album Repurcussion. The band invited a trio of local wind instrumentalists to accompany them on two songs; when they came out to play on “Living a Lie,” the band’s founder Chris Stamey noted that the horn part for the song was written over the phone. He also dedicated a song to the city of New Orleans, as New Orleans bass player Jeff Beninato, founder of the New Orleans Musicians Relief Fund, collaborated with the band on their 1987 album The Sound of Music. The industry veterans certainly knew how to put on a show and, closing the show in style, drummer Will Rigby smoothly tossed his drumstick in the air, caught it, picked up his suit jacket, and coolly sauntered off stage with his band mates in tow.
