Watch Lushlife go lyrical in the new DIY music video for “Magnolia”

Possibly the most innovative lyric video we’ve ever seen – which, okay, just kidding. It’s one of the most innovative ANYTHING videos we’ve ever seen, which is all the more impressive considering its shoestring budget.

Today, NPR Music premiered the latest clip from Philly rapper Lushlife – “Magnolia,” the Grateful Dead-sampling lead-off track from his excellent Plateau Vision – under the headline “What Can You Make With  $80 and a Hot Glue Gun?” The story, as we got it from main man Raj Haldar at the 215 Festival this weekend – two fans and filmmakers from Oklahoma City, Lamar High and Nik Harper, contacted him with the basic idea.

Some time later, he touched down in OKC for the shoot and was greeted with a flatbed truck filled with each of the songs 188 words sharply-illustrated with paint pens on cardboard discarded from grocery stores. Each word was large enough to wear as a hat. The shoot commenced, with Haldar and some 65 extras jamming out and interacting with one (or more) of the lyrics.
