RIP Major Harris, former member of The Delfonics and singer of “Love Won’t Let Me Wait”

Seventies R&B star Major Harris, who had a Billboard Top 100 hit (Number Five) with “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” in 1975, and a former singer in The Delfonics, died in Richmond, Virginia today. He was 65 years old and died of congestive lung and heart failure according to the Associated Press. Harris joined the legendary Philly soul group The Delfonics in 1970, after singer Randy Cain left the band. Harris’s solo career peaked with “Love Won’t Let Me Wait.” written by Philly producer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (and founding member and lead guitarist of Philadelphia studio group MFSB) Bobby Eli along with Vinnie Barrett. Harris came from a musical family; his brother Joe Jefferson wrote hits songs for The Spinners including “Mighty Love,” and Major’s cousin was Norman Harris, a Philly music legend in his own right. “Love Won’t Let Me Wait” was a slow, sexy ballad recorded at Sigma Sound Studios with many of the Sound of Philly/MFSB musicians.
