Welcome to the Folkadelphia Sessions, a weekly feature focusing on the in-studio performances recorded by the Folkadelphia crew. Here, folk musicians and singer-songwriters are given the opportunity to share songs that we have recorded in a live, intimate, and often stripped-down fashion at the WXPN studios. There is a real truth and beauty in the rawness of the whole set-up that we hope you’ll hear and enjoy!

Fine, I’ll concede; when I told you about these Folkadelphia Sessions, I led you to imagine a world of acoustic musings and dust bowl ballads. The fact is that I bent the truth, but I only did so with the best intentions in order to open your mind up to explore singers, songwriters, and storytellers in a variety of forms. Take today’s focus: Brooklyn two-piece, the girl/boy combo She Keeps Bees. The band operates on the fringes of bluesy indie rock, opting for distortion and dynamics over the traditional twang. Hone in on singer Jessica Larrabee’s writing and singing. Take for instance the session track “See Me,” the musical grunginess sets the scene, allowing the listener to enter the world of the protagonist, as she yells her impassioned assertions “I’m still your daughter/see me”. Like many effective songwriters before them, She Keeps Bees manages to display the beauty and beastliness of this world, and distill the essence succinctly (and with charisma, if I may say so) into song form.

She Keeps Bees (Jessica Larrabee and Andy LaPlant) recorded these songs for us before they performed at Kung Fu Necktie on October 18th. Stream and download the entire session below (it is best enjoyed in dimly-lit, hazy rooms IMHO.) The band put out a 7” of songs this past summer and hopefully will be releasing even more new material soon.
