Tonight’s Concert Picks: Jukebox The Ghost at Union Transfer, Deathfix at Johnny Brenda’s, Belgrade at Kung Fu Necktie, Gemini Wolf at The Note
Beneath Jukebox The Ghost’s poppy veneer are serious influences. It’s hard to pick up on the group’s interest in Nabakov, for instance, while watching their infectious long shot video for “Somebody.” Yet, the group touts President Taft’s wikipedia biography on their facebook page. A witty, slightly offbeat sense of humor characterizes the group’s music aesthetic, too. Their latest album, Safe Travels, takes a pop approach to dark issues such as mortality and maturity. Catch the local band performing from their new album at Union Transfer tonight. Tickets and information for the all ages show with Matt Pond and The Spring Standards are available here. Below, stream the music video for “Somebody.”
Deathfix is something of a super group. The band brings together Brendan Canty (Fugazi and Rites of Spring), Rich Morel (producer of Depeche Mode, The Killers, Yoko Ono and Cyndi Lauper), Davin Ocampo (Faraquet and Medications) and Mark Cisneros (Medications). The band was formed a couple years ago, but just released its debut LP in February. The album has received critical praise and the band is currently touring to support it. They’ll be playing at Johnny Brenda’s tonight with Dubpixel with Robin Bell and Wigwams. Tickets and information for the 21+ show are available here. Below, stream Deathfix’s track “Transmission.”
Philadelphia locals Belgrade play tonight at Kung Fu Necktie. The group has one EP out and will be opening for Pilot to Gunner. Belgrade’s sound recalls pop rock of the 90’s. Despite their retro sound, the group has only been together since 2011. We covered them in the fall of 2012 for playing the Before the Bridge Music Festival. Tickets for the 21+ show are available here. Below, stream Belgrade’s EP.
Gemini Wolf is a local staple. The duo has been working together for over a decade, and has made a name for themselves in the Philadelphia scene with their eclectic, electronic sound. Their third album, Infinite Sand Dunes, was released in 2011 and its track “Murderous” has an eery, psychedelic music video, which you can stream below. Tonight, Gemini Wolf will play The Note with Kali Ma, No Sir E, Telequanta and Old Deep. Tickets and information for the 21+ show are available here.
