Tonight’s Concert Picks: The Homophones at Ortlieb’s Lounge, Balkan Beat Box at The Blockley, Future Islands at The Depot in York
Philadelphia’s own The Homophones will be coming out of hiatus and bring their indie-pop influenced sound to Ortlieb’s Lounge tonight. The groups eerie and nostalgic resemblance to legendary musical acts such as the Smiths is apparent in their October single Sweater Weather released in 2011, and their Grey Ghost EP, also released in 2011. Since their most recent releases, the group took a short hiatus and is now beginning to write new music, as well as develop a new musical style. Their return brings with them a new keyboardist, and as Jason Ferraro of the group says, a “strange combination of influences (Fleetwood Mac, New Order, Television, bad 90′s alternative radio, etc.)” Any other information on their show with Swim Deep and Fantastic Imagination can be found here. Below, download the Homophones song “Eraserhead.”
The American-Israeli electronic musical group Balkan Beat Box will be bringing their upbeat sound to The Blockley tonight. Primarily focusing on Mediterranean-inspired melodies, the musically diverse three-piece has been steadily releasing material since 2005, and will be playing songs from their past material off of their most recent album Give which was released in 2012. The politically and socially aware album is the group’s fifth studio album released by Nat Geo Music and Crammed Discs records. Tickets and information for tonight’s 18 and up show with Delhi 2 Dublin can be found here. Below, watch a music video for Balkan Beat Box’s “Money” off their album Give.
Future Islands plays The Depot in York tonight for an 18 and over show. Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland the trio has released three studio albums, with their most recent being On the Water in 2011. After the release of their latest album, the group remained relatively quiet until last year when they released their single Tomorrow available for purchase through Upset The Rhythm records. Below is a video of Future Island’s “Balance” off On The Water as well as a link to their single Tomorrow. More information regarding the show with Other Colors can be found here.
