Today’s download is from London’s Savages, who just released its debut album, Silence Yourself. Savages formed in the Fall of 2011, and played their first live show in January, 2012. Over 11 powerfully and fiercely played songs, the all female post-punk band fronted by Jehnna Beth are already receiving well deserve critical acclaim. Pitchfork anointed it as Best New Music, calling it “one of rock’s most commanding and ferociously poised debuts in recent years, the work of a band whose outsized confidence and sharp clarity of vision doesn’t correlate with the short amount of time it’s been together.”
Although Making Time RADio plays predominantly electronic and dance music, I’m always searching for dance-friendly rock bands to play on the show. Savages’ music exhibits energy, emotion, passion and purpose, and “She Will” has it all: a driving rhythm section, passionate vocals, dark guitar tones and cymbal crashes, all culminating in a 30-second frenzy that keeps building and building. “She Will” recalls ’80s post-punk bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees while still sounding fresh, new and relevant.
