Last Good Tooth ain’t your mama’s (or grandmama’s) folk group. The New York State-based, Providence, Rhode Island-born band have all of the elements of a traditional tribute – often fiddle, banjo, and guitar arrangements accompanying unpretentious and interactive songs, but the overall feel of Last Good Tooth is more contemporary and inventive than that. It’s almost as if, while having a few beers, they spun their parents’ 60’s American folk revival vinyl collection and thought, “we can do this, we can totally do this,” then they kind-of did it. The result is a commingling of Appalachian style music, garage rock, and a tinge of something weirder and experimental. Their new album (and Team Love Records debut) Not Without Work And Rest is uninhibited without the baggage of recapitulating the past – it’s the folk music of today.

Last Good Tooth came to the XPN Studio on the afternoon before their concert at Johnny Brenda’s where they opened for Spirit Family Reunion (who we’ve also had into the studio) on April 2nd of this year. They also were just featured as WXPN’s My Morning Download this month and for a limited time, you can stream their album via Filter Magazine. Listen and download their Folkadelphia Session below:
