The Week’s Best Free MP3s, incl. Khari Mateen, Plow United, Diplo

Local musician / producer Khari Mateen tossed in a cover of George Gershwin’s “Summertime” to celebrate the season.  Mateen gives the Porgy & Bess aria a funky make-over with staccato string parts and chunky beats.  Fun fact – the lyrics to “Summertime” were written by DuBose Heyward, a relative of local singer-songwriter Heyward Howkins.  Stream and download the cover below.

Two Folkadelphia Sessions this week – first up, an endearing acoustic performance by Laura Stevenson, followed by a rocking & rolling set from Brooklyn’s Plates of Cake.  The spectrum of music represented by these two sessions is Folkadelphia’s mission in action, i.e. presenting a braod definition of what it means to be “folk music.”  Stream and download two tracks below and dig in to the rest here.

90s punk rock outfit Plow United have surged back onto the scene with this year’s Marching Band, the local band’s first album in fifteen years.  This week, they brought their thrashing, high energy live show to South Philly’s Studio A for a Key Studio Session.  Stream and download “Coda” below.  Get the rest of the set and watch a couple of session videos here.

XPoNential Music Festival 2013 performer Matt Pond recently released his Hole In My Heart EP, a four-track recording that includes a cover of Stevie Nicks’ “Wild Heart.”  The Philadelphia native is scheduled to perform on the Marina Stage on Saturday, July 27th.  Tickets and more information for the festival can be found here.

Diplo celebrated a social media milestone this week – the producer / DJ reached 1 million Twitter followers.  To show his appreciation, the former Philadelphia resident released a track called “Crown,” which features Mike Posner, Boaz Van De Beatz and RiFF RAFF.  Check out the track below and see Diplo / RiFF RAFF in action at next week’s Mad Decent Block Party.
