Philly venue The Blockley has teamed up with GRIOT Urban & Social Consultants and RECLAIM Marketing in order to create a monthly concert series to help generate awareness about issues involving solitary confinement, mass incarceration, senior citizens and women prisoners. The series aims to educate and inform the public about “the Prison Industrial Complex and the associated conditions/treatment in prisons.” Each month the Blockley will host a concert, featuring “EDUTAINMENT, information booths, craft vendors and phenomenal artists who are dedicating their art and social reach to these causes.”

What better artist to kick things off than legendary New York group The Last Poets, whose music fused free jazz percussion with socially-conscious spoken word that propelled the civil rights movement and paved the road for rap music a decade down the road. The group plays this Sunday, August 4th, supported by Hakim Greene of 1990’s hip hop pioneers Channel Live, and Philly-based neo-soul singer Rahnda Rize. Tickets and info can be found here.
