JC Brooks and the Uptown SoundIndie soul-funk outfit JC Brooks and the Uptown Sound are playing a free show at Morgan’s Pier tonight. The band is touring in support of their new record, Howl, which was released this May on Bloodshot Records. JC Brooks has a strong, classic soul voice that his band backs with a part funk, part indie rock, part post-punk sound. Check out their recent single, “Rouse Yourself;” the silly music video features Aubrey Plaza and Jake Johnson. Find more information on the 21 plus show here.

Not an orchestra in the traditional sense, the West Philadelphia Orchestra is a brass, balkan-inspired, party-starting big band. They’re playing an early show at the Penn Museum tonight, from 5 – 8p.m. Both eccentric and eclectic, the WPO performs a variety of amped-up music that comes from the colorful cultures of Eastern Europe. Watch a video of their recent performance at Underground Arts below. Find more information on the concert here.

Remember that catchy song “I’m not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend how to Dance with You?” If so, that’s why Black Kids sound familiar; the band got a lot of mention for that track but have been pretty MIA for the last few years. According to their social media, though, they’re working on new material. They’re also performing at Johnny Brenda’s tonight, alongside (fittingly named) openers k i d s. The experimental/noisy pop outfit hails from Athens, Georgia, and released a live album are US this May. Listen to the distorted, 90s influenced “LO(v)ING ( jimmy )” below. Re-familiarize yourself with Black Kids as well; frontman Reggie Youngblood dons a nice blond wig in his solo song “Taylor Swift.” You can go here for more information on the show.

Singer-songwriter and musician Rickie Lee Jones has been making music since the 70′s. Tonight, she’s bringing her soulful r&b and jazzy pop-rock sounds to World Cafe Live in Wilmington. Her last album, The Devil You Know, was released in 2012. Get more information on the concert here, and check out a recent live version of Jones performing her classic “Chuck E’s in Love” below.
