Speaking of Key Studio Sessions, this week’s featured local cellist Dan Kassel. The layered, atmospheric tracks on his latest LP Bloom were inspired by time spent in Nepal and India and cross the borders of classical, world and rock genres. This week’s Folkadelphia Session took the crew to the Historic St. George’s United Methodist Church to record an episode with The Staves. Three part harmonies and age-old storytelling weave in and out of the U.K. sibling trio’s four tracks – stream “Mexico” below before listening to the full set here.
New Jersey’s Pine Barons were in town with The Districts this weekend. The four piece walks through psych rock and Americana with a sprinkling of video game-esque electronica, most notably at the beginning of “Carnival,” which you can get below as a name-your-own-price download.
JustXSudan released his debut track “Away” a few weeks ago and it was so good The Key made sure to catch up with the local rapper at the Philly Folk Fest to talk about influences, starting out as a rapper and getting encouragement from his mom Ursula Rucker (who was performing at the festival).
