Oregon natives Typhoon will play Johnny Brenda’s tonight. The eleven piece outfit released their fourth studio album White Lighter back in August. The band successfully manages to offset their dark lyrics (which reflect lead singer, Kyle Morton’s childhood struggle with Lyme Disease) with pleasant alt-folk, choir-pop soundscapes. Tickets for the event can be found at Johnny Brenda’s website.
Tonight will also find South Jersey’s By Surprise playing their final show of the year at PhilaMOCA (Philadelphia Mausoleum of Contemporary Art). The band released their Criteria EP on Topshelf Records earlier this year. Tales of teen angst color their shade of ’90s-inspired emo (think Weezer and Jimmy Eat World) that you’d be silly to not indulge in. Check out PhilaMOCA’s website for more show details.
Meanwhile, ZZ Ward brings her mix of old soul and contemporary R&B to the TLA tonight on her Down and Dirty Shine Tour. Ward released her debut album Til the Casket Drops last October which featured a guest verse from rap’s golden child, Kendrick Lamar. Ticket information can be found here.
