Tonight’s Concert Picks: XPN Welcomes Polica at Union Transfer, XPN Welcomes Drive-By Truckers and Old 97’s at The TLA, Philly Sings Philly at The Fire

XPN welcomes Polica to Union Transfer tonight.  The Minneapolis achieved critical success following the release of their 2012 debut Give You the Ghost, spurred by singles “Dark Star” (which landed at #388 on last month’s 885 Greatest Songs of the New Millennium countdown) and “Wandering Star.”  On their new record called Shulamith, Polica took their synth / bass / double drumset / vocal arrangements even deeper, creating an incredibly dark and heavy environment that verges on frightening at some points (while staying instantly catchy and intriguing).  Tickets and information for tonight’s all-ages show with Marijuana Deathsquads can be found here.  Watch the video for “Warrior Lord” below.

Drive-By Truckers and Old 97’s join forces at The TLA tonight.  The alt-country Truckers, led by Patterson Hood, are gearing up for the release of an expanded vinyl edition of their 2000 live album Alabama Ass Whuppin’.  Old 97’s, meanwhile, have finished recording their own new record, with The Replacements Tommy Stinson lending some guitar tracks.  Tickets and information for tonight’s all-ages show can be found here.  Below watch Drive-By Truckers perform “18 Wheels of Love.”

The four-part Philly Sings Philly series kicks off tonight at The Fire.  The residency gives local musicians a chance to perform their favorite songs written by fellow Philadelphia artists, and this week features performances by Sean Hoots, Brad Hinton, Divers and more.  A few cover recordings have been released by the project – listen to Hoots cover mewithoutYou’s “Aubergine” below.  Tickets and information for the 21+ show can be found here.
