Download a new Work Drugs song, “Chemical Burns” (playing Johnny Brenda’s 12/14)

With their Christmas Spectacle on the concert calendar and a new record called Insurgents planned for release in early 2014, you had to know Work Drugs would begin teasing new songs eventually. Their latest, “Chemical Burns,” follows in the four-on-the-floor, big-beat direction of “Young Lungs” and “West Coast Slide,” the singles from their previous LP Mavericks. It’s uptempo and body moving, but unlike those futuristic jammers, this song blends a bit of the old with the new, commingling the glossy new wave fixations of Work Drugs past with the nightclub-ready vibe of their current sound. In the end, it doesn’t fall tremendously far from the Work Drugs tree, but that’s fine, since it’s a totally fun slice of digital pop.
