Mutual Benefit is the musical brainchild of Jordan Lee. Originally from a suburb near Columbus, Ohio, Lee’s travels to Austin, Boston and Brooklyn over the last several years have led him to record by himself or to collaborate with others on several singles and EP’s as Mutual Benefit. Lee also runs the Kassette Klub record label. On December 3rd, Mutual Benefit’s first full length album, Love’s Crushing Diamond, is being made available on the Other Music Recording Company label, associated with the Other Music record store in New York’s East Village. Mutual Benefit plays Boot & Saddle on Tuesday, February 6th.
Love’s Crushing Diamond is the sound of a lush, cinematic, delicate sunrise. Orchestration and soft and warm instrumentation is plentiful, especially on songs like “Advanced Falconry,” “C.L. Rosarian,” and “Strong River.” Found musical sounds come and go, and there’s a pop narrative that seems timeless from the first song to the final old timey island vibes of “Strong Swimmer.” Below, listen to a few songs from the album.
