Toronto-based rock four-piece July Talk makes it’s Philly debut tonight at MilkBoy. Channeling the gravel-voiced aggression of Tom Waits and the haunting tones of Denali, front-duo Peter Dreimanis and Leah Fay lead a dynamic band that is equal parts raw and mystical. Watch a World Cafe performance of “Don’t Call Home” below. Get tickets and and info on tonight’s show at the XPN Concert Calendar.
Philly’s Dark Blue headlines PhilaMOCA tonight. The three-piece, made up of Philly punk scene vets John Sharkey III (guitar and vocals), Andy Nelson (bass) and Mike Sneeringer (drums), the band says it is inspired by equal parts oi! (Last Resort) and Britpop (The Stone Roses), though there are undeniable hints of Nick Cave and The Cramps in the mix as well. Tickets and info on tonight’s show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar. Check out their “Subterranean Man” single below.
XPN welcomes Minneapolis singer Caroline Smith and her band The Good Night Sleeps to headline Boot and Saddle in South Philly tonight. Founded in 2008 amid the midwestern indie-folk scene, Smith’s albums have become gradually more produced, with last year’s Half About Being a Woman employing lovely harmonies and a pop music sheen to delightful effect, making for this emerging artist’s best work to date.
