Since his excellent T-Bone Burnett produced, self-titled debut was released in 1997, David Poe has applied his craft as a traditional “singer-songwriter,” on a handful of studio albums. His songs have been recorded by Daryl Hall, Grace Potter, Curtis Stigers, Duncan Sheik and others. He has written scores for dance and theater projects (The Copier: Music for Cedar Lake Contemporary Ballet and Shadowland: Music for Pilobolus), films, television shows (Nashville) and has produced records by various musicians including Regina Spektor. Poe is releasing his new studio album, God & The Girl on August 10th. He plays the Tin Angel tonight. Go here for tickets and more information about the show.

Below, download “Lonely Like Me” from David’s new album. It’s a gorgeous, intimate, acoustic based love song. If you’re familiar with David’s studio recordings, it’s a classic David Poe song that showcases his excellent sense of melody and arrangement. If you’re not familiar and you’re a fan of Paul Simon’s early solo work, and James Taylor, this should strike the right chord with you.

The warm, propulsive acoustic guitar opening of “Lonely Like Me” grabs your hand and promises to take you for a heart-pounding drive with the top down. What you don’t know is that you’ll learn more about yourself and your co-pilot than you bargained for. The drive is all the more beautiful for it. And it belongs to you. “God & the Girl” is going to be the album of the year.

David’s work has always felt to me like intruding on someone’s private pages of a journal torn out and put to music. Deep and thought provoking, often as if you shouldn’t be listening but just can’t help yourself. It draws you in. I cannot wait to hear the whole album GOD & THE GIRL. Pure talent.
