If that image of Ryan Adams in Rock God stance doesn’t give you an indication, the closing trifecta of XPoNential Music Festival day two was high-energy and memorable. A sizable crowd filled out the theater and lawn of the Susquehanna Bank Center to watch as Adams was joined by Jenny Lewis and Dawes to jam out into the breezy Saturday night.

In something of a make-up for their rainout in 2013, Dawes kicked off the show with a short and sweet half-hour set, culminating in a rousing rendition of their signature hit “When My Time Comes.” Lewis followed, working across material from her new solo LP Voyager – opening single “Just One Of the Guys” was a winner, as was “Slippery Slopes” and “Head Underwater” – but also dipping back to her time in Rilo Kiley for winning performances of “Silver Lining” and “The Moneymaker” from 2007’s Under The Blacklight.

Adams joined Lewis for some guitar shreddery on The high point, though, was a breathtaking, round-the-mic performance of “Acid Tongue” featuring backup vocals from Dawes.

Adams was charismatic and comical, calling out to the festival “party people” filling the lawn, delivering riffed-up, extended renditions of “Oh My Sweet Carolina” and “Let It Ride” and debuting a healthy selection of new material from his self-titled record, due out on September 8th on his own Pax Am label. “You can listen now and you might think hey, that’s cool,” Adams says. “But then when the record’s out and you like it, you can tell people I saw that song the first time he played it!”

“Stay With Me” and “Shadows” sounded great, as did the opening single “Gimmie Something Good.” Check out a gallery of photos from the concert and watch some fan videos below.

Silver Lining is actually also from Under the Blacklight, not Rabbit Fur Coat! That Acid Tongue performance sent shivers up my spine for the entire song – seeing Jenny was worth the price of the 3-day pass alone.

What the heck was up with the “music” before Ryan Adams’ set? Actual conversation of the Apollo 11 flight before they landed on the moon? And Dawes should have been given more time than they got.

  3. Renoss

Dawes should have definitely been given more time.

  4. Steve Johnson

Yes, Dawes should’ve been on longer… missed beginning of their set to watch all of the rousing C.J. Chenier.

  5. John Vettese

Yes yes! Thanks for catching that LL, sorry for the mixup. Written in a post-concert daze in the middle of a bonkers festival weekend!

Ryan seems to be enjoying himself again now. The new songs are great. There is no doubt.

Probably Ryan on a sci fi mission or something. Perhaps riffing off of the idea they are space cadets. Weed and space make a lot of sense when mixed together. PS. Isn’t Ryan on medical marijuana these days anyway? Correct me if I’m wrong. Although he has quit smoking if that advert was to be believed. So who knows?
