Inspired for years by the Grateful Dead, The Band, Cat Stevens, and Sam Cooke, Nash released his debut album in 2005. Since then, he’s been releasing excellent records and touring. Day has drummed for the Kruger Brothers, toured with Sara Bareilles, and performed with Jennifer Nettles.
Last year, the idea of recording music together came to Nash when he had gotten off tour and was home in Vermont. He told CMT Edge recently:
“I was still running on rock ‘n’ roll time, fresh off a tour of consistently late hours. I was sitting on my couch with my 1960 Gibson LG-0, having a nightcap and thinking about my musical life, friends and heroes. I thought about how privileged I was to know so many incredibly talented songwriters, artists and musicians … some of them famous and rightfully so … and some of them virtually unknown or barely scratching the surface of relative obscurity.”
So Nash and Day began writing songs about “the contenders,” and used the roots rock sound of The Band as a musical jumping off point.
