Grande Marshall

Atlanta rapper Wara From the NBHD has released one of the best hip-hop albums of 2014, Kidnapped, and on it he collaborates with Philly rapper GrandeMarshall. Marshall, signed to Fool’s Gold Records, is currently working on My Brother’s Keeper, the follow up to his head nodding epic Mugga Man.

The Key reached out to GrandeMarshall to ask about the collaboration between him and Wara.

Wara and I first linked up at SXSW 2013 just by literally getting handed a copy of his first tape. I just rocked with the delivery of it, it was mad professional not on some CD in a jewel case time but something that anyone could see and never know you got it from SXSW. We ended up listening to it later, saw em again at Fader Fort and it’s been a wrap ever since. It wasn’t until A3C (a hip-hop festival in Atlanta) later that year that we had talked about working on music, that was the first time he mentioned Kidnapped to me. I dropped “Time” and gave em a shout out (“I’m on cruise control finessing with my n—a Wara”). We had linked up whenever he was in New York, stayed in contact – that’s just a real good dude beyond rapping. And you can hear it in “Raw” and the project more over with all the live instruments and everything it speaks volumes about who homie is it’s all so genuine.

No doubt that the live instrumentation, particularly on “Raw” is potent. From the string arrangements and piano to the jazzy and soulful flair of the trumpet that comes in towards the end of the song, Wara and GrandeMarshall sound like natural collaborators together.
Below, listen to “Raw” and watch the video.
