Before Thin Lips, there was Dangerous Ponies. Frontwoman and songwriter Chrissy Tashjian, her brother Mikey on the drums and bassist Kyle Pulley were all part of Philly’s premiere indie rock carnival from 2008 till about 2013. That band was a total blast and a spectacle; glitter, brightly colored costumes, singalong hooks, big arrangements. When that crew split, Tashjian refocused her energy into a more simplified, straightforward punk rock direction.

Initially a collaboration between her, Pulley and Pat Brier of Tigers Jaw and Three Man Cannon, Thin Lips grew into more than a recording project and Mikey came on board as a permanent live drummer. The sound is a bit more raw and aggressive, but still totally hooky – think Velocity Girl or Swearin’ as easy points of reference. The Gemini Moon 7″ dropped earlier this year, and the band is readying an EP called Divorce Year for release in early 2015.

For their Key Studio session, the band showed off its tight playing and infectious chemistry with two songs from the 7″ that’s available now via Bandcamp. To hear some of Divorce Year, though – it’s going to be great – you can catch Thin Lips opening for Hop Along on New Year’s Eve at Johnny Brenda’s. Tickets and information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
