If you snagged tickets to tomorrow night’s sold-out New Years’ Eve party with Hop Along at Johnny Brenda’s, it would do you well to check out the recently-released debut EP from opening act Roses. (Hell, even if you aren’t going to the show, you should listen.) Released via Bandcamp on Christmas Day, the three-song set can be delicate and pretty when it wants to, but it also has teeth – listen to the way the soft piano counterpoint on opening track “Boys” gets caught up in a swelling fuzz guitar backdrop as the song progresses.

A catchy and enjoyable project reminiscent of Death Cab and Matt Pond, the band is the work of one Matt Scheuermann, an Ohio native and former member of The Sidekicks who moved to Philly this year and tracked the EP with Matt Schimelfenig of Three Man Cannon. Listen to the EP below, download it at Bandcamp and for the ticket holders: make sure you get to Johnny Brenda’s early tomorrow, Roses goes on first.
