When New York-based one-woman band Weyes Blood released The Innocents late last year, it sounded like a number of ideas and interests converging. Idyllic British Isles folk, French pop, esoteric electronica, psychedelic rock all blended into a unique whole. But sometimes the best part to understand the whole is to take the pieces apart.
When the album dropped last fall, Natalie Mering, the woman behind Weyes Blood, put together a sublime mixtape for Impose Magazine that compiled songs from each of the genres that make up her musical DNA. We hear some of that weird 60s folk in Pearls Before Swine’s “The Surrealist Waltz,” and melodious soul sounds in The Temperess’ “Something So Right.” The warped cover of The Smiths’ “Panic” by Eola is an early highlight showcasing Mering’s pop leanings, and her hazy glam theatricality is represented by The Stranglers’ “Don’t Bring Harry.”
