When he was living in Virginia Beach back in 2011, Wesley Bunch spent a lot of his free time writing and recording songs for a bedroom pop project he dubbed Suburban Living.  It yielded a couple releases: the Twin Peaks-referencing Cooper’s Dream EP in 2012 and the Always Eyes 7″ in 2013. And though some light touring and appearances at CMJ resulted, Bunch wanted more.

“I wanted to just move to a different city than my hometown,” he says. “I was there for over 10 years and just loved Philly’s vibe. Had some friends here and just went for it!”

Through those friends he hooked up with a crew of live collaborators: guitarist Chris Radwanski and drummer Michael Cammarata (both formerly of Night Panther), as well as bassist Peter Pantina. With this solidified lineup, Suburban Living stepped up its game tremendously with hooky songs and evocative sonics, and the new self-titled LP – out next Tuesday on Paper Cup Records – is easily the band’s strongest release.

The reference points are aplenty: do you like New Order? Jangley 80s dance-pop? Slowdive? Vibey 90s dream-pop? Any combination of the above? Then this band is for you. But more appealing than the aesthetic is the songs, and Bunch writes come infectious ones.

Their Key Session features two from the new album – the effervescent “New Strings,” the punchy “No Fall” – as well as a couple from the back-catalogue. The opening “Video Love” from Always Eyes is an expansive explosion of sound, while “Give Up” from Cooper’s Dream is a delightful singalongable earworm.

Stream the set below, download it at Soundcloud and catch Suburban Living’s album release party this Saturday night, January 24th, at Bourbon and Branch in Northern Liberties. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
