November 2014 saw the release of the self-titled debut EP from Cherry-Hill based indie-rock band The Waterbears. The generation-spanning group comprised of family and extended family members creates an energized electric rock sound that is invigorated by strings and piano.

The group tackles both a full, charged sound and a quiet, contemplative sound with expertise. The six track album gracefully displays a wide variety of moods, from the intense track “The Floor” and fast-paced “Mercy” to the atmospheric “Caterpillar.” The unique songs flow easily from one to the next, each providing its own facet to this gem of an album. The album, described by the band as “loaded with generous helpings of inspiration and experience” and “inventive, graceful, righteously angry and filled with hope”  explores many emotions and experiences through the wide variety of sounds the band produces and through the poignant and poetic lyrics, soulfully carried by singer Don Merlino.

Though The Waterbears is a new band, with their mastery of their music and their distinctive sound it is clear that they will be around for a long time. The band does not have any shows announced, but watch their Facebook page for updates. Listen to their self-titled EP below.
