Nearly two decades after their hit 1993 album Become What You Are, The Juliana Hatfield 3 have reunited and released Whatever, My Love, through Connecticut label American Laundromat Records. Though Hatfield herself has released an outstanding string of solo work over the years, some of her biggest hits (“My Sister,” “Spin The Bottle”) are from that album with The Three. And as we heard in the album – released last Tuesday and streaming on the American Laundromat website – it sounds like the trio hasn’t missed a beat.

The twelve-track album opens with Hatfield’s soft and open voice on “Invisible.” This song certainly takes a page from the trio’s 90’s indie pop sound with its sunny acoustic riffs. “If Only We Were Dogs” is heavier, with deepening guitar distortion and a thrashy chorus. In a music video for the track, Hatfield spends time in a dog cage, runs around on all fours, and rummages through a trashcan.

The album closes with “Parking Lots,” a track with compelling lyrics like “so many questions still remain / so many metaphors for pain.” Hatfield plays a bluesy guitar solo accompanied by a soothing bass line from Dean Fisher and an assertive beat from drummer Todd Phillips.

The Juliana Hatfield 3 plays two back-to-back shows at the Boot & Saddle with It’s A King Thing on March 2 and 3. Tickets are sold-out for the March 3 date, but some are still available for March 2. Tickets and more information can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar; watch the video for “If Only We Were Dogs” below and listen to Whatever, My Love in its entirety here.
