The Chairman Dances are ready to release a new EP called Samantha Says, following up 2014’s full-length concept record The Death of Samuel Miller. The new effort will be out on May 29th in conjunction with a release show at The Rotunda.

On Samantha Says, the local art-rock outfit again reach outside of themselves and channel a character to the fullest depths. Themes of relationships, self-image and uncertainty are woven through the EP’s five tracks, accompanied by quirky, playful arrangements that are more pop-focused than previous recordings from the band.

“Self-Portrait” is the EP’s opening song, introducing us to Samantha through her own eyes (“Now I’m forlorn, now I’m lucid, now I’m sobbing, half-awake / I was born to be much smarter than I am”) and the opinions of people close to her (“What you have Sam, what you Samantha is enough / Yes you can Samantha”). “Self-Portrait” paints the beginning of a picture that the subsequent tracks will complete, until we know Samantha like she’s a character in our favorite book.

Listen to “Self-Portrait” below. Tickets for the Samantha Says release show will be available here.
