When I saw Blue Smiley open for Mumblr’s Full Of Snakes vinyl release show last week, I was automatically hooked by their dark, experimental guitar riffs and heavy sound overall. The Philly-based trio just released an LP called ok that works through a cycle of fuzzy alternative rock. “Warn” opens with a gloomy guitar-bass duet and quickly bounces through thrashing drum fills. The jazzy bassline accentuates the track as it rises and decrescendos. With a surf rock guitar lead-in, “Air” is quickly swayed into complicated percussive rhythms with grungy distortion. This band is a definite listen for fans of Philly rocker Alex G.

A physical release through Third Floor Tapes is coming soon, but in the mean time check out Blue Smiley’s ok below and hear more on their Bandcamp.
