Recap: Folk icon Buffy Sainte-Marie surprises NonCOMM with a rager of a performance

Buffy Sainte-Marie began her career in the the 1960s and 70s North American folk scene, but the performance she brought to the NonCOMM stage was intensely louder than that might lead you to believe. The singer-guitarist has a new album out called Power In The Blood, and the songs she showcased from it were pure ragers: loud guitar, barreling drums, a cathartic vocal delivery by Sainte-Marie. It was surprising, and by the time the title track led into “Not The Lovin’ Kind,” excitement in the room had reached a fever pitch.

She brought the energy back down to the melodic, acoustic sound that is a bit more her trademark on a beautiful performance of “The Universal Soldier” from her 1964 album It’s My Way!, and the closing “Starwalker” from 1976’s Sweet America, but not before another excellent new selection in “Carry It On.” Listen to her performance, watch video and check out a gallery of photos below.
