The Jesus and Mary Chain’s Psychocandy 30th anniversary tour will stop at Union Transfer

Shoegaze pioneers The Jesus and Mary Chain have been busy with a year of touring to support the 30th anniversary of their 1985 debut,Psychocandy. The tour will finally make a stop at Union Transfer on September 22.

Led by brothers Jim and William Reid, The Jesus and Mary Chain is regarded as one of the best pop acts of the later 20th century. They’re regularly cited by the media on numerous “best ever” lists and by countless present-day bands as a major influence. With their abrasive attitude and reputation, the JAMC set the benchmark for music in the post-Sex Pistols punk scene. Jim Reid has said of the album:

Psychocandy was meant to be a kick in the teeth to all of those who stood in our way at the time, which was practically the whole music industry. In 1985 there were a great many people who predicted no more than a six month life span for the Mary Chain.

Their angry, violent, and abrupt 20-minute sets drowned in feedback stood in stark contrast to the beautiful, throbbing noise of Psychocandy. That sound is considered a landmark in recording for its combination of guitar feedback with traditional pop song structures. It’s easy to see the way they emulated classic 60’s pop groups like The Beach Boys, The Stooges, and the Velvet Underground, but made their own sound by burying it all in noise.

The album spawned the now-infamous singles “Just Like Honey,” “My Little Underground” and “Never Understand”.
