First, there was the Scud Mountain Boys, then the Pernice Brothers, and then The New Medicants. The thread connecting these bands, Joe Pernice, has added a new band onto his resume, Roger Lion. Pernice has teamed up with Seattle producer and instrumentalist Budo (Josh Karp) on this new collaboration. The duo are releasing their self-titled debut album on September 19th on Team Love Records.
Roger Lion doesn’t have any of the alt-country musical markings of the Scud Mountain Boys or the indie-rock classic AM radio lean of The Pernice Brothers. The first song from RL’s forthcoming release, “A Dead Man’s Song,” is something completely awesome and different, with soft beats, lilting horn and string arrangements, and fuzzy, tripped out electric guitar riffs, that distantly recalls “7 Seconds” by Youssou N’Dour featuring Neneh Cherry.
