We know Philly’s Abi Reimold as a few different things. An ace photographer (she shoots for us sometimes). A crafter of moving folk songs and cathartic rock songs. A gripping live performer. We didn’t expect electropop diva to make its way onto that list, but hey, the unexpected evidently happens when you work with Rob Devious.

The dude who helped Milton expand his sonic territory on the new single “Surely” worked with Reimold last month on the elegant “Promise,” which opens the new Pile of Keith compilation – a showcase of emerging musicians in the Philly and Baltimore DIY music communities. A trap beat and nervy, skittish vibe immediately places Reimold in new territory, and the song builds with alluring harmonies and textures – not to mention emotional lyrics.

Make no mistake, Reimold’s moving songwriting is still intact here. It’s just spun in a way we never expected to hear it, and it’s all the awesomer for it. Word is the new record Reimold is making won’t sound like this – “Promise” is just a for-fun one-off, not a new direction per se – but it’s great all the same. Download it for free, along with the rest of Pile of Keith, via Pack Rat Records’ Bandcamp page, and don’t miss Reimold this Saturday July 11th when she opens for the amazing SOAK at Boot and Saddle. Tickets and more information on the show can be found at the XPN Concert Calendar.
