What happens when you take the smooth R&B and soul stylings of Leon Bridges and remix his songs with some classic Houston hip-hop? Well, you can hear the fun results on Coming Home To Texas, a new mixtape by Brooklyn DJ MICK (formerly Mick Boogie).

2015 has been a break out year for the Texas R&B singer. Bridges released his sparkling debut, Coming Home, in June, and songs like the title track, “Better Man,” “River,” and “Smooth Sailin'” have grabbed the hearts and souls of fans. Enter MICK, a fan of Bridges, who writes about the project on his website:

Leon is, to me, the new artist of the year. The guy who is going to win all the Grammys. The guy you’re going to hear in all the TV commercials. An icon in the making.

His album has such a iconic soul foundation…and is widely considered a classic.

I thought it would be interesting to update the formula slightly, and make it more contemporary but still timeless. So I dug in the crates and re-conceptualized various Texas hip-hop and soul classics into new updated textures for Leon to sing on. Think legends like UGK, Scarface and DJ Screw.

Bridges starts his North American Fall tour in October, and with few exceptions, every date is sold out, including his show at Union Transfer on Saturday, October 17th.
