The ahead-of-the-curve indie / roots label Paradise of Bachelors recently released a gorgeous collection of acoustic instrumentals and duets by James Elkington & Nathan Salsburg called Ambsace.

The follow-up to their startling 2010 debut, Avos, this album continues to showcase their beautiful marriage of duets with original compositions and covers of songs by Duke Ellington (“Fleurette Africaine”), Norman Blake (“Slow Train”), and “Reel Around The Fountain,” originally recorded by The Smiths (both guitarists are fans of The Smith’s guitarist Johnny Marr).

British-born Elkington, who has lived in Chicago the last 15 years, is a member of Jeff Tweedy’s band Tweedy, recently played second guitar on Richard Thompson’s Still, (produced by Tweedy), and has performed with Steve Gunn, Daughn Gibson, Kelly Hogan, Jon Langford, Eleventh Dream Day, and others. Salsburg is a solo performer, works with with Joan Shelley, and is the curator of the Alan Lomax Archive.

In October, Elkington & Salsburg are touring with Steve Gunn. They open their tour on October 22nd at the First Unitarian Church Side Chapel; get tickets and more information on the show at the XPN Concert Calendar. Below, stream Ambsace in its entirety.
