The opening block party for Mural Arts Open Source pop-up bodega in North Philadelphia was rained out earlier this month, but a new date and new performer has just been announced. This Sunday, October 18th, from noon to 3 p.m., M.A.K.U. Soundsystem – a Brooklyn-based eight piece Latin roots rock band – will perform at the neighborhood celebration at 2200 North 8th Street. It’s their first appearance in Philly, so let’s make them feel welcome.

The party takes place right next to the pop-up community bodega space created by Philly artists Keir Johnston and Ernel Martinez; the installation explores the intersection of the Latino and African American communities in North Philadelphia.

Philly based Open Source artists Keir Johnston and Ernel Martinez are in the process of converting a warehouse on 8th Street and Susquehanna into a community center dedicated to capturing stories of migration and immigration into Philadelphia. Information from the captured histories will be rendered visually inside and outside the building. The goal of the center is to bridge the African American and Hispanic communities that are divided by the 5th Street corridor through sharing of personal histories. The block party will celebrate the intersection of cultures with music, dancing, food, interaction with the artists and the people in the community.

The concert is presented by World Cafe’s Latin Roots series, in collaboration with AL DÍA News Media, AfroTaino Productions, and Raíces Culturales Latinoamericanas; go here for more information on that.
