WXPN is currently in the middle of the Greatest Year In Music countdown. The Top greatest years in music are being counted down (or up, depending on how you look at it), with the Number One Greatest Year in Music being revealed on Friday, November 6th. We got an unsolicited, heartfelt plea from Fergie, the owner of Fergie’s Pub about the year that he thinks is the best year in music.

Why 1977 is the best year in music?

In 1977 I was 14 years old and having some form of awakening – if it was sexual it was more theoretical than practical.
My older brother of 18 months, Paudy, was in a band called DY DX – a play on ACDC. They covered ACDC, Thin Lizzy, The Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. Yes folks, Free Bird! All this influenced me.
Elvis Costello’s debut – My Aim is True came out that year. That album gave us Allison and one of my favorite lyrics – “She’s filing her nails as they’re dragging the lake” – from Watching The Detectives.
1977 gave us Fleetwood Mac’s Rumors and ACDC’s Let There Be Rock – how about that for balance. Whole Lotta Rosie is one of my favorite rock songs and Fleetwood Mac don’t sing that. Can you say Punk Rock?
The Sex Pistol’s Never Mind The Bollox Here’s The Sex Pistols was released that year and set the world on fire. The Clash showed up with their album The Clash.
In a different direction we had Saturday Night Fever.
We got Abba: The Album.
It was the year of Queen, ELO, Bat Out of Hell, and two albums from David Bowie and also Santana’s She’s Not There was everywhere – in my world anyway. In the charts we had Stevie Wonder, Elvis, The Stranglers, 10CC, The Eagles, The Commodores, The Jacksons, Rod Stewart, Wings.
Look at the diversity and quality of this year in music. Elton John and Aerosmith?
Ok Margaritaville if ya want it. Supertramp?
How about KC & The Sunshine band for fun?
Television’s Marquee moon came out that year. And how about this – Bjork released her debut album in 1977 at the age of 11. Truth I tell ya.
Peace out. I am 1977 and I approve this message. Fergie of Fergie’s Pub
