Philly-via-Maine transplants Friendship have just released a new music video for their track “He Said ‘You Seemed So Much In Luv'” off their debut LP You’re Going to Have to Trust Me.

We’ve gotten to know the somewhat mysterious band this summer and fall – read an interview with the founding trio here – and were quickly drawn into the number of pages they take from the dark country-rock book of Jason Molina. Singer Dan Wriggins always seems to be teetering on the edge of an emotional breakdown, singing with a somber sense of resignation “We were never gonna stand a chance / I thought you knew about that.”

The music video, directed and choreographed by Antonia Z. Brown, stars dancer Hillary Pearson and follows her as she prances throughout a room decorated only in plain sheets. As Pearson dances, she often wraps her entire body in the sheets, as if in a futile attempt to escape from the world. It’s a moving performance, shot impressively in one take, that totally captures the emotional torment of the song.

Wriggins spoke to the video’s concept, saying:

The goal was to make something where the song and the dance were on relatively equal ground, rather than a music video (where choreography is often meant to accompany cinematography and the song) or a dance performance (where the song is a vehicle for choreography).

Listen to the entirety of You’re Going to Have to Trust Me here, and watch the powerful music video below. You can catch Friendship perform at the All Night Diner on December 14th; tickets and more information on the show can be found on its Facebook event page.
