RSVP for an encore Zydeco Crossroads Dance Party with Chubby Carrier

We celebrated the end of XPN’s Zydeco Crossroads project last month with two nights of music and camaraderie, but don’t kick your boots off just yet – Grammy Award winners Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band will join us for a final Zydeco Crossroads Dance Party this Saturday, November 21st at Union Transfer.

Based in the zydeco hotspot of Lafayette, LA, Carrier and his band have been playing music together for almost three decades and have eleven records under their belts. Their most recent, 2010’s Zydeco Junkie, earned them a Grammy Award in the Best Zydeco or Cajun Album category and spawned a music video of the title track that became the first zydeco video to be posted on MTV’s website.

That is just one marker of zydeco’s increasing “mainstream” recognition. While it’s been a crucial part of American music history since the early 20th century, its ability to morph and blend with contemporary trends (hip hop, funk, indie rock and more) is now bringing zydeco to wider audiences whether they know it or not (among the pop culture places zydeco has peeked through in recent years is perennial wedding reception line-dance “Cupid Shuffle”).
