Despite the fact that we all have SEPTA horror stories and complain about late trains, no-show busses and crowded El cars, Philly’s public transit system has probably helped you get where you needed to go, on time, at least a handful of times. So here to play an ode to the orange line are The Whips and their new song “BSL (Broad Street Line),” taken from the group’s debut LP Roots Rock Element.

The Whips are a new venture from members of Far-Out Fangtooth and The Tough Shits, so they know what they’re talking about when it comes to the Broad Street Line.

“BSL” the song is a surf-rocky, slice of life anthem that tells a universal tale of needing to take the subway to a show, possibly missing it, but knowing that you can “catch the next one in thirty minutes or less.” Simple, true and fun. The guitar riffs chug along like a steadily moving train, while field recordings of the BSL really set the mood.

Roots Rock Element is out now digitally via Burger Records, with a cassette release coming in January through the local Suicide Bong label. Download “BSL (Broad Street Line)” below and pick up tickets for The Whips’ show at Ortlieb’s tomorrow with Mystery Lights and Los Calzones here.
