Last week, local indie rock trio Square Peg Round Hole announced a new partnership with Spartan Records. The ambient / post-rock / instrumentalists will release their sophomore LP on the Seattle based label this coming March, but they also contributed a song to Homesick Again: A Spartan Records Christmas Album for the holiday season along with local label-mates Kiska.

Square Peg sure stuck with the homesick theme of the compilation with their cover of Sufjan Stevens’ “Only At Christmas Time.” Their instruments are mostly larger versions of things that could be found in a child’s toybox: xylophone, music box, melodica, keys, jinglebells and a thumb piano. And while the video itself is playful in its editing, the song is quintessentially Sufjan in its somber, nostalgic tones.

Meanwhile, Kiska did a rendition of “12.23.95” by Jimmy Eat World. The song’s heartache comes through in the harmonies and pacing, while subtle chimes and jingle bells add a dash of the holidays.

Check out the covers below. Kiska play MilkBoy on January 15th; tickets and information can be found here.
