After breaking out on the college rock underground in the 80s, and having a successful run acorss the 90s, iconic trio Violent Femmes return today with “Memory,” their first new song since the release of Freak Magnet in 2000.

With a familiar and endearing acoustic guitar-bass chug and Gordon Gano’s distinctfully yearning vocals, it’s a wistful meditation on the mental cobwebs that come with age: “I don’t remember the color of your eyes / I don’t remember so hey, I guess it’s a little surprise.”

The song premiered today over at NPR Music, where Robin Hilton observed:

“Memory” has the playful quirkiness, infectious beats and jittery observations of the band’s earliest work, from the 1980s. But teen angst is replaced with middle-aged irritation.

“Memory” will be on We Can Do Anything, the band’s ninth album, due out March 4th on Play It Again Sam. Listen to the song below.
