Channeling the soulful vibes of Bill Withers, Andrew Bird has shared a new song, “Capsized,” from his forthcoming album, Are You Serious, out April 1st on Loma Vista Records. The record features contributions from Fiona Apple and Blake Mills.

In 2012, Bird released two solo albums, followed by a collection of covers of songs by The Handsome Family, a band that Bird toured and collaborated with. In 2015 he released a collection of experimental, ambient sounds, Echolocations: Canyon, so in a lot of ways this is Bird’s first proper studio album of new songs in four years.

Bird talked with NPR Music’s Bob Boilen about the new album, produced by Tony Berg. About “Capsized,” Bird told Boilen:

“I think the reason it [‘Capsized’] has this staying power, there are just a few songs in your lifetime that can do this, where you can play them every night and it doesn’t feel like you’re being penned in by the music. It changes because you feel different as a person from one hour to the next throughout the day and it’s rare to have a song that can change with you. Sometimes certain things come out of me that I don’t expect and it just adapts to how I feel. And that’s how I felt at that moment.”

Bird will be playing the Electric Factory on Monday, April 4th. Go here for tickets and more information about the show.
