The theme of this week’s Friday Morning mixtape is “Sample Examples,” an hour long mix of original songs and the samples of those songs used by musicians. An example of this is Warren G and Nate Dogg’s sample of Michael McDonald’s “I Keep Forgettin’. In doing some research for the hour of music, we used Who Sampled.com as a reference, an incredible website and database of information about sample-based music, cover songs and remixes.

XPN Morning Show host Kristen Kurtis talked with Philly’s DJ Kirsh on the history of sampling, connected with the Friday Morning part of the exploration of the use of sampling in contemporary music. In music, sampling occurs when a portion, or “sample,” of one sound recording is taken and reused as an instrument or a sound recording in a different song or piece.

Listen to the interview with DJ Kirsh below, and check out our Spotify playlist of some Sample examples.
